Description:

Classical Antiquities. Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Canosa, ca. 4th Century BCE. Simply sublime, a closed vessel featuring a deity, probably Athena (identified as Minerva in Rome) - goddess of poetry, wisdom, and warfare - draped in a voluminous chiton and himation and donning a crested helmet on her finely delineated visage, her arms crossed over her chest as she stands between two branches or leaves atop a globular body supported by a pedestal base, with a high-raised handle emerging from behind and curving backward to meet the vessel's shoulder. The piece is mold-formed, and liberally adorned with pink, purple/red, and white-slip. At the upper end of the body are registers of purple/red and white checkered/diamond patterns on the front and red and white repeated chevrons, their points set sideways. A special piece created to honor this goddess of heroic endeavors. Size: 5.375" in diameter x 15.625" H (13.7 cm x 39.7 cm)
