Description:

Greek, Campanian, ca. 4th century BCE. A graceful black glazed pelike, a classic example of such vases created by the Campanian culture with its flared wide rim, cylindrical neck, double handles, and rounded body tapering down to a narrow disk foot. The double handles arch subtly upward, connecting the gently sloping shoulder to the neck of the vessel. The glaze was expertly applied in a smooth, even layer and fired to a glossy black that has now attained a silvery sheen. Scholars believe that black glaze vases were initially developed to imitate the look of silver vessels; however, eventually they were appreciated for their own aesthetic. Size: 5.7" W x 11.65" H (14.5 cm x 29.6 cm)
