Description:

Magna Graecia, Greek colony of Campania, ca 340 to 325 BCE. Large and very fine pottery bale amphora - so named for the bale handle at top. Decorated in red-figure technique with side "A" depicting a standing warrior standing in front of an alter. He holds a shield in one hand, and spear in the other, helmet upon his head. Side "B" shows a female holding an oinochoe in her left hand and a skyphos for wine in the right. Her hair is held in a sakkos and she wears a long flowing himation - palmettes and fillets separate the scenes. Attributed to the "CA" Painter. Classic Campanian style! A large vessel - Size: 17.75" H (45.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Julie & Ugo Rempte collection, Upstate New York, acquired before 1980.
