Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 360 to 320 BCE. A classic blackware guttus (or guttos) form with a ribbed, rounded body, a single loop handle, and a high spout with a ribbed rim, all on a raised concave spooled foot. The tondo is decorated with a low-relief scene depicting Herakles (Roman equivalent Hercules) holding the skin of the Nemean lion in one hand and a snake in the other. Only a small area where the foot meets the body is unglazed; the rest is covered in a glossy black glaze with faint areas of silver iridescence. Size: 4.75" W x 6.15" H (12.1 cm x 15.6 cm)
