Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A nice example of a black-glazed pottery guttos (oil-pouring vessel) of a characteristically squat and rounded form with a single spout - this example, somewhat unusually, having that spout in the form of a snarling lion's mouth. A ring-form handle is attached at the shoulder at a ninety-degree angle from the spout. Set inside a deep rim is a strainer, studded with five small holes for pouring. The exterior walls are lightly scalloped, giving the piece a nice texture. Size: 4.35" W x 2.4" H (11 cm x 6.1 cm)

Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection; ex-Bonhams London Antiquities Auction, 8 May, 2013, part of lot 14; ex-private English collection of an academic, acquired between 1950 to 1975
