Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fine mold-formed pottery guttus (or guttos, used as an oil-pouring vessel) of a characteristically squat and rounded form with a single spout. The discoid body rests atop a concave, tiered ring foot, has a ring handle projecting from the side of the shoulder, and features dozens of pattern-molded ribs around the periphery. The center of the body depicts an image of a satyr in relief, with shaggy hair, a pair of small horns, pointed ears, and puffy facial features. Covered in a black glaze which has lightened to a dark-grey, this is a fine example of utilitarian Campanian artistry! Size: 4.2" W x 3.8" H (10.7 cm x 9.7 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1960s
