Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 325 BCE. A black-glazed terracotta guttos (also guttus), a pouring vessel of a characteristically squat rounded form with a concave tiered foot, ribbed rounded walls, a single spout extending to the side, and a ring-shaped handle. The tondo is decorated with a low relief image of Ophioukhos (Ophiuchus) - the serpent bearer presented as a nude male grasping a sinuous snake that surrounds his form. A guttos like this would have been used by the ancients for holding precious oil to keep their lamps constantly full and burning bright. Size: 4.5" W at widest point x 3.375" H (11.4 cm x 8.6 cm)
