Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 360 to 320 BCE. A gorgeous black-glazed pottery guttus (or guttos, oil-lamp filler) bearing the feminine face of a gorgon atop the tondo, perhaps representative of Medusa. The vessel exhibits a spool-shaped foot, a wheel-form body with dozens of vertical incisions around the periphery, a protruding ring handle, and a cylindrical spout with an everted rim, all enveloped in lustrous black glaze. The gorgon's visage is distinctly female, with piercing eyes and a tapered jawline, and the coiffure is styled into individual cords which distinctly resemble the gorgon's notable serpentine hair. S Size: 4.4" L x 4.1" W x 3.1" H (11.2 cm x 10.4 cm x 7.9 cm)

Medusa is the mythical female monster with venomous snakes for hair and a gaze which could instantly turn a man into stone. The concept of a gorgon is at least as old as Homer and continued to be used as a monstrous symbol throughout the Roman and post-classical period, especially popular as decoration on pottery.
