Description:

Ancient Greece, Magna Grecia, Cumae region of southern Italy, Campanian, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. Attributed to the Ivy-Leaf Painter of the Apulianizing Group. An exceptional red-figure bell krater created in Greek Campania, well painted on each side. Side "A" shows a finely dressed female draped in a flowing chiton, her coiffure adorned by a kekryphalos. She holds a fan in her left hand and a casket in her right, standing with her left knee bent and right leg extended as if leaning toward the left and she turns her head to face the large casket. Festoons of flowers cascade from her right hand and another blossoming plant rises from the ground to her left. On side "B" is a standing youth facing left, draped in a long cloak, and holding a walking stick with his left hand. A rosette, sprig of leafy foliage, and two rectangular makers marks identifying the Ivy-Leaf painter occupy the surrounding field. Size: 11.375" in diameter x 12" H (28.9 cm x 30.5 cm)

Further embellishing this intruiguing iconographic program are wonderful design elements such as a continuous spray of laurel leaves adorning the underside of the flared rim, a band of repeated wave motifs beneath the figural program, and grand palmettes beneath the upturned loop handles. Such large bell kraters wre used to mix wine and water for ceremonial banquets and celebrations.

The Ivy- Leaf Painter, according to Trendall, was the first of the Apulian artistic migrant artists. Trendall states that his work was "almost purely Apulian, and close in style to that of the Lucera Painter. Several of his vases come from Canosa, where he may have begun his career; others have a Campanian provenience, and his use of white for the flesh of women is an indication of assimilation to the local practice." (A.D. Trendall, Red Figure Vases of South Italy & Sicily, 1989, p. 170)

This piece was published in "The Red-Figured Vases of Lucania Campania and Sicily" by A.D. Trendall (Oxford at the Clarendon Press, 1967) - Plate 194.
