Description:

Magna Graecia, Greek Colony of Campania, ca 340 to 325 BCE. A large and very fine bale amphora - so named for the bale handle at the top. Decorated via the red-figure technique with side "A" depicting a male figure standing with his left leg slightly bent toward the right and his right leg slightly toward the left. He holds a vessel in his right hand and a cloak over his left arm, and wears a wreath upon his head. Side "B" shows a female head in profile, her hair in a lovely sakkos. Large palmettes separate the scenes; the neck is adorned with laurel leaves, the shoulder with a running wave motif. Classic Campanian style boasting impressive artistry and intriguing iconography! Size: 4.625" W x 11.75" H (11.7 cm x 29.8 cm)
