Ancient Greece, Classical period, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A wonderful hammered bronze fragment of an ankle guard with a tapered body and a shallow central crest. Several petite perforations along the periphery enabled the warrior to tie the armor to his lower leg beneath a greave that would be protecting his shin. Thick layers of mottled brown and green patina have formed across the entire composition. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 3.875" W x 8.9" H (9.8 cm x 22.6 cm).

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in May 2011; ex-private Cambridgeshire, England, UK collection; ex-Axel Guttman collection
