Description:

Ancient Greece, Tanagra, Boeotia, ca. 4th century BCE. A large and beautiful wheel-thrown pottery kantharos with a wide, rounded foot, a projecting midsection, a deep interior bowl, a flared rim, and a pair of finely-shaped strap handles with small tabs near the middle. The interior and exterior surfaces boast faint areas of silvery iridescence which provide a nice chromatic complementarity to the jet-black glaze. Size: 8.25" W x 6.125" H (21 cm x 15.6 cm).

  • Condition: Handles repaired from several large pieces and entire base reattached, with small chips, light overpainting, and some adhesive residue along break lines. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, minor nicks and chips to rim, handles, body, and base, with fading to areas of black glaze. Nice earthen deposits throughout, and faint silvery iridescence in scattered areas. Old inventory label on base.
