Description:

Greece, Boeotia, Archaic period, ca. 6th century BCE. A terracotta abstract idol depicted with arms outstretched, a human face, and a tall crown. Outstretched arms, common on idols, are often interpreted to mean an act of supplication to the gods. Figures like this one have been found around the Boeotian plain, which was a fertile agricultural area in antiquity (as it remains today). Some archaeologists believe that these figures represent the goddesses Demeter or Persephone, who had roles relating to the harvest and fecundity. Size: 2.6" W x 6" H (6.6 cm x 15.2 cm); 6.8" H (17.3 cm) on included custom stand.
