Lot 22D
Greece, Athens, ca. 450 to 425 BCE. A fabulous cylindrical cup with a flaring lip that meets the rounded bowl at an angle. The bowl is set on a disc foot with a torus profile - qualifying it as a sessile or stemless kantharos. The curved strap handles curve join the area just beneath the lip to the mid-section of the body. The exterior walls on each side of the vase are elaborately painted with from top to bottom - a band of tongues, a panel of alternating red and black columns with arrow-like motifs in black and white on one side and a panel of nested hill-like forms with single trees before each one - also in red and black with added white details, and finally a continuous band of running wave motifs. A circular mark adorns the base. Size: 6.5" W handlespan x 4.875" H (16.5 cm x 12.4 cm)
The name "Saint-Valentin class" comes from the place where a similarly decorated kantharos was found. The class has been divided by Seymour Howard and F. P. Johnson into a number of different groups on the basis of the patterns used.
