Greece, Athens, ca. 430-420 BCE. Twin-handled pottery drinking cup on twice profiled ring-foot with high wall and two loop handles. Central medallion with double frame, representing an athlete to right, his right arm akimbo. He holds a strigil in his left hand and stands in front of a turning post in a palaestra. Exterior: On each side an athlete between tendrils with lotus blossoms. A palmettebelow each handle. Below, a red band. Concentric circles of differing widths around a dot on the underside. 6-1/2" bowl diameter (16. 5 cm).
The turning post behind the athlete places the scene in a gymnasium. For the type of cup with central medallion and palmettes below the handles flanked by tendrils, cf. a cup by the Marlay Painter in the Museum in Ullastret, Spain, BAPD 31691. A cup of similar shape and decoration by the same painter is in Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum, inv. no. 93, CVA Wien, Kunsthistorisches Museum (1) Pl. 24.3-4, BAPD 216223.< br>
