Greece, Athens, ca. 520 - 500 BCE. A very fine pouring vessel decorated in the black-figure technique with added white and purple pigment. The single narrative panel depicts the seated Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and fertility offering a bell krater full of wine to a seated Ariadne, consort of Dionysus and daughter of the Cretan King Minos. An array of wine branches fill the background, with the two characters being framed by a linear design. 8-1/2"H. Provenance: Ex- D. Falliers Collection, Denver, CO, acquired in the 1980s.
