Description:

Ancient Greece, Classical to Hellenistic, Athens (Attica), a. late 5th to 4th century BCE. A lovely cast-leaded bronze funnel presenting with an annular foot, a bulbous body, a steeply-sloped shoulder, an attenuated neck, and a wide, bowl-like rim. Intended to refine olive oil, this ancient vessel has a small circular aperture at its top to allow the bowl-like rim to function as a funnel and a larger circular hole at its base, through which the oil can drain. It sits upon a modern, three-legged brass stand, and would have stood over a dish intended to catch the newly-refined oil. Two lovely bas-relief rings adorn the shoulder of this fascinating implement. Size: 2.125" in diameter x 3.375" H (5.4 cm x 8.6 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
