Description:

Greek, Attic, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A playful, beautiful example of a blackware kyathos with painted cream and dark red designs on its exterior and a stamped design on its interior. The interior design looks like five dice, each showing four, impressed into the bottom of the basin; tiny lines radiate outwards from the center to give further texture to the bowl. The exterior is painted with delightful designs; on the opposite side of the horizontal handle, we see a dragon-like serpent and a playful dog in a grassy field; flanking that are two symmetrical designs of animal bodies and paws. Curving artistic flairs outline each design and form a band of decoration around the rim. The piece stands on a pronounced foot. The kyathos was a dipper, used for serving liquids. Size: 5.8" L x 4.5" W x 2.2" H (14.7 cm x 11.4 cm x 5.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
