Greece, Athens or perhaps Euboea, Attic or Euboean, ca. 7th to 5th century BCE. A graceful neck amphora adorned in traditional black-figure technique, of the standard form with a clearly defined neck, dramatically curved shoulder, flared rim, and high arched handles, all supported by a torus foot, with hand painted Komos scenes featuring six interacting standing figures on one side and seven on the other. Komos (Comus), son and cup-bearer to Dionysos (the god of wine, pleasure, ritual madness, ecstasy, and theatre) was a god of revelry, festivity, and general merrymaking. Adding to the iconography, a water bird is painted below each handle. Size: 5.375" W x 8.125" H (13.7 cm x 20.6 cm)
A strong example of the black figure technique in which the figural and decorative motifs were applied with a slip that turned black during firing, while the background was left the natural color of the clay. The vase painter also took the time to incise the slip in order to delineate individual features and gestures. Further embellishing the vase are various decorative details. Encircling the shoulder are fine tongues and the neck is adorned with stylized lotus palmettes on one side and grape clusters on the other. Below the central composition is a ground-line followed by a wide linear bands, as well as a geometric ray pattern radiating from the band adorning the foot. Quite an intriguing example!

- Condition: Chips to rim as shown. Surface wear commensurate with age. The red areas to the glaze were intended to be black and are a result of misfiring - adding a human element to the piece. As any potter knows, many outcomes are dictated by chance and the firing environment.
