Description:

Greece, Attic (Athens), Classical period, ca. 450 BCE. A handsome example of a sessile kantharos, a deep, conical cup with two large strap handles and a disc foot. The body is decorated with twin identical panels of stylized foliate patterns, so that three rows of stacked ferns sit atop a broader band of horizontal, laurel leaves; these are above a line of densely packed vertical frets. The kantharos form, used for drinking wine, can be traced as far back as the 8th century BCE, and in later times it was featured prominently on black- and red-figure vases, often carried by Dionysus or Herakles. Size: 6.25" W x 4.2" H (15.9 cm x 10.7 cm)
