Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. An attractive wheel-thrown pottery cosmetics container, known as a lekanis, often given by fathers to brides on their wedding day. The vessel presents with a squat foot, a hemispherical body with a deep basin, and a thin rim with a pair of parabolic handles just beneath. A raised ridge along the rim enables a secure fit for the accompanying lid, and the discoid handle allows for the effortless removal of the lid. Both the body and lid are enveloped in lustrous black glaze, and reserved areas are visible atop the lid handle and beneath the foot of the body. Size (w/ lid): 7" W x 3.8" H (17.8 cm x 9.7 cm)
