Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. 400 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery olpe with a flat base, a globular body with a rounded shoulder, a corseted neck, a flared rim, and a high-arching handle which joins rim to shoulder. The vessel is accentuated with a lustrous glaze of a jet-black hue typical of Attic ware, and a ring of 8 stamped palmettes encircles the shoulder. This style of olpe is also sometimes known as an oinochoe which is characterized by the tall handle that rises above the rim. Size: 2.25" W x 3.875" H (5.7 cm x 9.8 cm).

  • Condition: Area of rim repaired from multiple pieces with small chips and light overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to base, with light softening to stamped motifs, and minor fading to original glaze coloration. Light earthen deposits as well as faint silver iridescence throughout.
