Description:

Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. late 5th to early 4th century BCE. An elegant oinochoe, a pouring vessel, with a design that showcases the timelessness of ancient Greek pottery. The body is gently flaring, rounded, standing on a round base; the shoulder meets the body at a sharply acute angle, and flows seamlessly up into a long, thin neck which is capped by a long, open spout that is abstractly zoomorphic. A sinuous, rounded handle is attached at the low point of the spout and the shoulder, and bends gently inward lower down its length, forming a hold for two fingers. The black glaze has attained a near iridescence from the firing process, which is known from Attic pottery. This type of vessel would have been used for holding some precious liquid, with the long neck used to prevent evaporation. Size: 4.25" W x 5.5" H (10.8 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection, ex Charles Ede, London, England; ex private collection, Lyon, France, acquired 1950, thence by descent to her grandson
