Description:

Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 490 to 480 BCE, likely The Leafless Group. An Attic black-figure skyphos depicting a winged Nike standing in composite profile and flanked by two seated cloaked figures. Phytomorphic tendrils decorate the field. Details are incised and delineated with fugitive red and white pigment. The vessel itself is a classic skyphos form comprised of a deep rounded body with a carinated rim and upraised loop handles. Size: 6.4" W x 3.375" H (16.3 cm x 8.6 cm)

The skyphos belongs to the "leafless category" of vases, so named because there are no foliage borders. Instead, the artist has opted to use slender bands and concentric lines above and below the exterior scenes in order to delineate the field of the paintings.
