Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens, the Antimenaean tradition, ca. 510 BCE. An impressive neck amphora adorned in the traditional black-figure technique, the imposing form with an echinus mouth and tripartite handle, all supported by a torus foot, with hand painted scenes on both sides. Side A features a lively satyr between a pair of lovely maenads, the threesome engaged in an energetic dance. Note how the satyr and left maenad are kicking up their heels! The female figures are dressed in chitons comprised of patterned fabric, one with a contrasting sash. Both play the krotala, a percussive instrument similar to castanets used to keep the beat during ceremonies. Side B features an ensemble of four more dancing maenads dressed in similar garb, also playing the krotala. Adorning the field are finely delineated vines; decorating the handles is a design of four palmettes on long tendrils with lotus flowers to the sides and underneath. Below the central composition is a register with dotted and linked lotus buds; from the foot spring relatively geometric rays. Encircling the shoulder are tongues and the neck is adorned with double palmette and lotus designs. An impressive Attic vessel with rich iconography. Quite the party! Size: 12-1/2" (31.8 cm)
