Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. late 6th to 5th century BCE. A beautiful lekythos (oil pouring vessel) with a long, thin neck ending in a flat, flared rim; a thin, strap-like handle rises in a curve from the gently sloping shoulder to the neck. The body tapers to a narrow leg and a flat, thick foot. The body is ornamented with black-glazed palmettes and ray bands on the shoulder. Some incised details on the palmettes complement the artwork. Size: 2.125" W x 6" H (5.4 cm x 15.2 cm).

  • Condition: Restoration to areas of foot, body, handle, neck, and spout rim with overpainting and light resurfacing along break lines. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, fading to pigmentation in some areas, small chips to rim, shoulder, and foot, and minor roughness in some areas. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice silvery patina across most black-glazed surfaces. Old inventory label beneath foot.
