Description:

Greece, Athens, ca. 5th century BCE. An elegant ceramic lekythos (oil/libation vessel) painted via the black-figure technique, depicting Dionysos - god of wine, pleasure, ritual madness, ecstasy, and theatre - sitting in profile, donning a long robe with incised drapery folds, holding a drinking horn, and flanked by a pair of animated satyrs with delineated goat-like horns, beards, and tails who appear to be dancing or simply 'partying' with reverie. In addition to this iconography, the vessel is decorated with grapevines in the field and an ornamental hanging lotus bud pattern adorning the shoulder. Size: 3.625" in diameter x 7.625" H (9.2 cm x 19.4 cm)
