Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. 500 BCE. A graceful Attic, lekythos of the classic and elegant form. This slender vessel, used to store precious oils for pouring libations on ritual occasions, is finely decorated in black figure technique, depicting a rider in a chariot drawn by one charioteer and two horses. A ray band pattern adorns the shoulder. Artists using the black-figure vase painting technique applied figural and ornamental motifs with a slip that turned black during the firing process; however the background remained the inherent color of the clay. As we see in this example, vase painters articulated individual forms by incising the slip and adding white (and sometimes purple) slip details. This lekythos displays the hallmarks of the art with precise, meticulously drawn small scale figures and a keen attention to detail. Size: 6-3/8" (16.2 cm)
