Description:

Greece, Athens, ca. 450 BCE. This is an amazing Attic kylix (drinking cup) with finely shaped squared-off handles, a wide, evenly sloping bowl, and a delicate round foot joined to the body by a narrow leg. The decoration is classic black figure, painted using shapes reminiscent of silhouettes or shadows. The exterior shows delicate contours that were incised into the paint before it was fired to give further shape to the figures painted around it. The exterior scene features a variety of human figures, some seemingly engaged in conversation; the interior has a figure who looks like a warrior holding a shield and spear. Mythological scenes, especially drawn from the Trojan War or the legends of Heracles, were common subjects for the artists creating black figure pottery. Size: 9.3" L x 7" W x 2.25" H (23.6 cm x 17.8 cm x 5.7 cm).
