Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic from Apulia, ca 350 BCE. A wonderful blackware pottery kylix with twin upraised handles attached to a shallow flanged bowl, all upon a concave, tiered round foot with a red center. On the tondo is a red hare/rabbit leaping over a leafy tendril. In Greek mythology, the rabbit was sacred to the messenger god Hermes, for the animal's swiftness resonated with the fleet-footed messenger. What's more, to "know thyself" was coveted by Greek philosophers, and at any given moment, a rabbit knows where he is - a well-known survival tactic as rabbits are constantly sought by predators. A wonderful example, attractive for its elegant form, the fine technique displayed, and its endearing iconography. Size: 11.75" W handlespan x 2.375" H (29.8 cm x 6 cm)

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-ArtAncient Ltd., United Kingdom
