Description:

South Italic, Greek, Apulia, ca 350 BC. A finely potted and skillfully painted pottery vessel in the style known as Saint-Valentin. The upper walls feature a rectangular panel decorated with diamond motifs, while the lower sections are painted in Gnathian style with flowering leafy tendrils delineted in added white pigment. Saint-Valentin vases first appeared in the second quarter of the 5th Century BCE in Athens and continued to be made there throughout the century. The genre mainly consists of sessile kantharoi and skyphoi painted with textile-like patterns of checkerboard, feathers, scales, and floral motifs. The style was later adopted by South Italic vase painters, including the artist who decorated this example. Size: 6.5" W handlespan x 4.4" H (16.5 cm x 11.2 cm)
