Description:

Ancient Art. Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A red-figure vessel with a trefoil spout (thus allowing liquid to be poured in any of three directions) decorated via the red-figure technique with a figural scene depicting a female donning a long flowing chiton and bedecked with a beaded necklace and bracelets, her hair dressed in a kekryphalos with a radiate stephane. She appears to move toward the right - thanks to the detailing made possible via the red-figure technique - and holds a large patera. To the lower right is an abstract palm tendril and above is a band of wave motif. A lovely example. Size: 4.875" in diameter x 6.75" H (12.4 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000, ex Arte Primitivo, New York City, USA

#126256

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces with tiny losses to the break lines. Expected surface wear with chips/nicks to the rim and spout, nicks and scuffs to the body. Still a good example and the imagery is vivid.
