Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, ca 340 BCE. A Greek pottery trefoil oinochoe decorated via the red-figure technique. The large decorated panel depicts a seated maiden dressed in an elegant chiton with drapery folds cascading over her curvaceous body, as she gazes upon a bird that she holds in her right hand. To the right, located behind her, is a nude youth (his body revealed save for a cloak billowing over his arms). To the left, and in front of her, is a female attendant donning a flowing vestment and diadem. Greek key adorns the lower section and band of laurel is above. To the left and right are bands of stylized arrow-like motifs. A wonderful example of this classic form, replete with skillfully executed, red-figure iconographic and decorative programs. Size: 8.625" H (21.9 cm)
