Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 BCE. A lovely dish with a glossy black background and a petite, round, hollow foot. Red-figure painting with some white/yellow details show a woman's face from the side - a "lady of fashion", wearing a kekryphalos, a type of hair covering, earrings, and a bead necklace. These faces are often thought to represent brides, or youthful women, and they are found painted onto pottery that was made to be placed in the tombs of women. Her head is set within a dramatic border or waves and floral motifs. Size: 8.45" W x 2.25" H (21.5 cm x 5.7 cm)

  • Condition: Expertly repaired and restored from what appears to be five or six large pieces. This includes some areas of overpaint, mainly along the repair lines. The black pigment on the surface has attained a silvery iridescence. Motif is very clear. The sides of the bowl are not even - probably a result of the manufacturing process.
