Description:

Greek, Apulian, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A striking ancient Greek Apulian red-figure olpe (wine jug), delicately potted and finely painted, of typical Apulian form; with a ringed base, globular body, short neck, flaring mouth and bifurcated looped handle. The iconography of the body is comprised of a wonderful rendering of Eros holding a casket that supports a patera in the right hand and a tambourine instrument in the left hand; a large fan extends from Eros' seat; the remainder of the body is decorated with sinuous palmettes. This central panel is framed by a band adorned with a wave motif below and a band of laurel leaves encircling the neck. All is expertly painted in red figure, a technique that allows for remarkable naturalistic representations of the human figure. In addition, fugitive cream-hued egg tempera paint added after firing, highlights the composition. Size: 5-3/4"H. Provenance: Ex-private Ketchum, Idaho collection, acquired at major auction houses and galleries before 2004. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108388
