Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. An elegant bichrome thymiaterion (incense burner) of a lovely form, the contours of the shape strongly articulated, the black surface decorated with a band of white laurel leaves around the upper base as well as the interior of the incense receptacle. Artists of the Greek Colonies in Southern Italy favored the medium of clay, because few examples of stone suitable for sculpting existed in their environs. This, of course, presented wonderful possibilities for painted decorative programs as we see in this example. Incense burners were popular among the ancients of the Classical World, oftentimes uses as offerings that were interred with the elite deceased. Size: 5.75" in diameter at widest point x 8.5" H (14.6 cm x 21.6 cm)
