Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A substantial wheel-thrown lidded lekanis, the lid beautifully decorated via the red-figure technique with two Ladies of Fashion wearing a saccos (head scarf) with a curled coiffure, separated by stylized palmettes and frets on the vertical rim that meets the similarly shaped body below. Twin applied loop handles protrude from either side of the bottom half, and each has short support bars flanking either side. The large knob features an additional radiating design surrounding a central dot on its depression; the concave, tiered foot mirrors the form of the handle to complete this wonderfully symmetrical vessel. Size: 7.75" W x 4.625" H (19.7 cm x 11.7 cm).
