Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulian, ca. 4th century BCE. A lovely two-part vessel used to store soaps and scented perfumes for the bath, decorated with twin Lady of Fashion portraits separated by palmettes and tendrils, the knobbed lid decorated with rays, and a fretted band around the base of the lid - all skillfully executed via the red-figure technique with nice details in fugitive white paint. Size: 3.75" W x 3.75" H (9.5 cm x 9.5 cm)

  • Condition: Pressure fissures to depression of knob on lid. Tiny nicks to rims of lid, handles, and lower section/container. Some frets on rim of lid are red due to misfiring. Scuffs to tondo. Nice iridescence to black finish. Inventory label on underside of base. Mineral deposits particularly evident on buff underside of lid and base.
