Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A black glazed pottery guttus (or guttos, used as an oil-pouring vessel) of a characteristically squat and rounded form with a fluted squat rounded body, a single ring handle, a central rising spout with a tiered rim, and in relief on the top a satyr with a bearded visage and goat-like pointy ears amidst his wild, wavy locks. See another Apulian guttus featuring similar iconography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession number 96.18.36). Size: 4.4" W x 3.6" H (11.2 cm x 9.1 cm)
