Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Eastern Apulia, near Ignazia, ca. 370 to 320 BCE. A wheel-thrown drinking vessel with a squat foot, a bulbous body with a corseted neck, a flared rim, and an attached loop handle joining neck to shoulder. The thistle mug is wondrously adorned in the traditional Gnathian manner with the application of red, white, and yellow fugitive pigment directly onto the glazed blackware surface. The motifs include white tongues on top, an enclosed white stripe, white-and-yellow stippling above a red stripe, and repeating pairs of lines with outward-facing hooks. Fine silvery iridescence has formed across most of the black-glazed surfaces. Size: 3.1" W x 4.125" H (7.9 cm x 10.5 cm).
