Description:

Southern Italy, ca. 325-300 BCE. Black-glazed terracotta pouring vessel of shallow/rounded, cushion-like body with flattish closed top, center medallion showing frontal head of an archaic fashioned lion. From the blurred details can be deduced that the mold was in use during a long time. Narrow gouged groups of verticals and crossed x-motifs on the body. Height: 9 cm (3.5"), Diameter at widest: 10.4 cm (4.1").

Provenance: Formerly in a public collection in Zurich; an old collection label reading Gewerbemuseum Zürich N. 2053.
