Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fine wheel-thrown pottery askos with a squat circular foot, a globular body, a tapering neck with a funnel mouth, and an applied stirrup-shaped handle with a projecting thumb rest on the verso. The entire vessel - save for the area beneath the foot - is coated in lustrous black glaze, and faint silvery iridescence has developed atop most glazed areas. The askos was used to hold liquids, and one of this size would have been utilized to contain scented oils and perfumes which could become viscous in the cold. The handle was used to lower the vessel into heated water to liquefy the oil. Size: 3.375" W x 3.8" H (8.6 cm x 9.7 cm).
