Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery askos (pouring vessel) with a flat base, a compressed discoid body with a convex top, a projecting funnel-form spout, and a high-arching handle with a shallow central crest. The entire vessel - save beneath the base - is covered in lustrous glaze of a jet-black color, and faint silvery iridescence has formed in scattered areas. Size: 6" L x 4.375" W x 4.5" H (15.2 cm x 11.1 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA; ex-private London, England, UK collection; written statement beneath base states vessel was found in Apulia in 1879

  • Condition: Restoration to area of handle terminal and body on verso, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Minor abrasions to base and body, with light fading to original glaze coloration. Light earthen deposits and faint silver iridescence in scattered areas. Written statement on bottom reads "found in Rubi (Apulia) in 1879, 260 before L.C."
