Description:

Greece, South Italic colonies, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A ceramic ringed askos used for storing oil or other precious liquids, with a circular base supported by a narrow foot, an over-arching strap handle, and a circular, flaring spout. This is an unusual form of askos, which are more commonly of a flattened, round shape. Instead, this askos is similar in style to those from the Eastern Mediterranean. Thick black pigment, now nicely adorned with a silvery iridescence and root marks, covers all but the foot. Size: 5" W x 3.45" H (12.7 cm x 8.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Leonard Lyle Dees collection, Topeka, Kansas, USA, acquired between 1950 and 1970
