Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A very lovely Red-Figure pottery calyx krater - similar in function to the bell krater, used to mix water and wine at the table. Tall banded foot, cylindrical body with two upward reaching handles and flaring rim. Each side of the vessel has been decorated with the ubiquitous Lady of Fashion. She is shown in profile wearing a tall sakkos tied with ribbons, as well as drop earrings. Liberal usage of added white and yellow/gold paint. A very fine example of this very desirable style of ancient pottery. Size: 7.25" W x 10.25" H (18.4 cm x 26 cm)
