Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A lovely black glazed pottery guttus (or guttos, used as an oil-pouring vessel) of a characteristically squat and rounded form with a fluted body, a single ring handle, and a central rising spout with a tiered rim. The central tondo displays the relief image of a nude, winged figure, perhaps Eros (Roman Cupid), the god of erotic love and sex. Size: 4" L x 3.75" W x 3.4" H (10.2 cm x 9.5 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; formerly in a South English estate collection; acquired in the 1990s from Andrea de Munter, Brussels, Belgium; previously in an old European collection
