Description:

Magna Graecia, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A large, black-painted bell krater, with a bell-shaped body standing on a narrow, tiered foot. The body is smooth, widening gently to a flaring mouth and flat rim, and undecorated save the remarkable handles which take on the form of animal heads, each one peering out with almond-shaped bulging eyes, impressed cup-shaped ears, and a prominent snout - so endearing! Surface has developed areas of lovely silver iridescence typical of ancient Greek blackware. Size: 12.5" W x 10" H (31.8 cm x 25.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-property from the George R. Francoeur Trust, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, sold to benefit the George R. Francoeur Scholarship Fund at Cranbrook Academy of Art.

#157139

  • Condition: Misfired as shown, but intact and excellent with minor surface flaws / spalls and deposits. One mysterious small hole on rim that was either created in antiquity or the result of a single drip of water on the same location for 2000+ years. Strange and thought-provoking!
