Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic colonies, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A blackware vessel with an apple-like body, a rounded spout with a deep lip/rim, and a narrow strap handle. The piece is adorned by a black-glaze, fired to a dull sheen that was meant to resemble a metal surface. A wheel-shaped motif is painted on the shoulder, above a thin painted ring around the upper body. The askos was used to hold liquids, and one this size would have been used to hold precious oils, which could become viscous when cold. The handle was used to lower the vessel into heated water to liquefy the oil. Size: 3.5" W x 4.55" H (8.9 cm x 11.6 cm)
