Description:

Greek world, Magna Graecia (South Italic colonies), Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A blackware vessel with piriform shape, a rounded spout, and a narrow strap handle. The piece is black-glazed, fired to a dull sheen that was meant to resemble a metal surface. The askos was used to hold liquids, and one this size would have been used to hold precious oils, which could become viscous when cold. The handle was used to lower the vessel into heated water to liquefy the oil. Size: 3.25" W x 4.25" H (8.3 cm x 10.8 cm)
