Description:

Greece, Classical Period, ca. 5th century BCE. A delicate 20K gold bracelet (85% gold), made of a hammered band of gold wrapped in a spiral form. Decoration on the bracelet gives it the appearance of a snake, with a low ridge down its back simulating a spine, crosshatching on the upper half of its body forming scaled skin, and a V-shaped head with bulging eyes. The serpent, with its ability to change its skin, symbolized both rebirth and fertility. Serpents were also frequent characters in Greek mythological stories, like the serpents who adorned Medusa's hair. Size: 2.3" W x 2.2" H (5.8 cm x 5.6 cm); 85% gold (equivalent to 20K+); total weight: 28.6 grams

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, collected in the 1960s

  • Condition: Slight bending to form, with small nicks and chips to the edges. One area shortly after the neck where there is a small tear to the gold. Overall excellent preservation of details. The gold is fragile and we do not recommend wearing the piece unless you are very careful.
